On August 26, a painter,Edmond Gourdon of Covington, La., fell from the Kyles Station Bridge over northbound Interstate 75, in Butler County, from scaffolding on the overpass. Reports indicate that the fall, which was about 14-20 feet, left the worker in critical condition after falling into a construction zone. Unfortunately yesterday, it was reported that Edmond Gourdom had died from his injuries Sunday night.
Gourdon was employed by Ucl Inc. in suburban Cincinnati. Ucl Vice President Gary Collins says everyone at the company is deeply saddened by the death. OSHA is investigating the accident, which could take up to several weeks.
OSHA requires the construction industry to have fall protection for their workers for anything above 6 feet. This company was about eight feet over the limit; so why not provide fall protection? Cost? Carelessness? Whatever the reason, another worker has lost his life due to the lack of fall protection.
